THE FLIGHT OF SLEIPNIR is one of the most interesting acts of our times and “Ascension” displays the very first steps of this charismatic band.
“Ascension” is comprised of the two long-gone self-released EPs “Wisdom Calls For Sacrifice” (originally released in 24 copies) and “Winter Solstice II”. From “Wisdom Calls For Sacrifice” the PINK FLOYD cover is absent but the collection contains a cover of PENTAGRAM’s “Be Forwarned” as well as a rare live version of “Angiz”.
To be honest I was expecting much rawer material closer to the Black Metal flavor of TFOS full lengths. Surprisingly the band seemed to have a very clear perspective for their musical direction since day one. The biggest difference with the band’s full lengths is that simply all of the influences are much stronger. The Black Metal roots, the love for traditional Doom and the experimentations with Prog Rock and Jazz were all there since the beginning.
“Ascension” is not the average demo-reissue kind of collection. Besides its historical value there are such great tracks like “Within The Fires of Muspell”, “Thrym’s Bane”, “The Deceiver, The Blind and The Beloved” which make this release function as a full length. This is a definite must for the fans of the band but without doubt most lovers of heavy music will enjoy this one.
The first press of “Ascension” comes in A5-Digipack, limited to 1000 copies, and a vinyl version will also be released later on. As I am informed from the press release the band is finishing up their fourth full length, entitled “Saga”. This is some great news! Until then “Ascension” will function as a great appetizer.
