Orcus Chylde – S/T(2012)

June 30, 2012 by drdoomslair

A 6-piece with a strange name from Germany! Hm… ORCUS CHYLDE make their debut and they seem very well determent to leave their mark on the scene. This band is for real. ORCUS CHYLDE presents a unique flavor to Doom. Constantly moving on a strange route somewhere between proto-Doom, Blues and contemporary “Retro Rock” they manage to sound unique even though their roots are the standard ones. To some they may sound like a more spontaneous version WITCHCRAFT meets ANATHEMA […]

Vinum Sabbatum – Bacchanale Premier(2012)

June 28, 2012 by drdoomslair

Unlike the name implies VINUM SABBATUM do not play a super-heavy form of Doom of ELECTRIC WIZARD. The band is closer to the Retro side of Doom and to some they may sound as a bad-ass, darker version of WITCHCRAFT. I don’t think this is a very successful comparison but what the heck; Retro Doom is quite straightforward to understand once you listen to it. Earlier this year the German label “Eyes Like Snow” re-released the long-gone demo of the […]

The Flight of Sleipnir – Ascension(2012)

June 27, 2012 by drdoomslair

THE FLIGHT OF SLEIPNIR is one of the most interesting acts of our times and “Ascension” displays the very first steps of this charismatic band. “Ascension” is comprised of the two long-gone self-released EPs “Wisdom Calls For Sacrifice” (originally released in 24 copies) and “Winter Solstice II”. From “Wisdom Calls For Sacrifice” the PINK FLOYD cover is absent but the collection contains a cover of PENTAGRAM’s “Be Forwarned” as well as a rare live version of “Angiz”. To be honest […]

Castle – Blacklands(2012)

June 26, 2012 by drdoomslair

San Francisco’s CASTLE, return with the follow up to the successful 2010 debut. With “Blacklands” the female fronted 3-piece once more attempts to marry many different styles of metal in a straightforward fashion. The emphasis is given on the 80’s true metal yet the execution is quite heavier and sounds a bit more modern. Billy Anderson is the man responsible for the production and I would say, once more he did a decent job. I am afraid this album will […]

Witchsorrow – God Curse Us(2012)

June 18, 2012 by drdoomslair

UK’s WITCHSORROW after their successful debut back in 2010 return with an album that should put them right on the top of most Doom Metal lists for this year. If their debut sounded heavier than a mammoth then I simply have no words to describe how heavy “God Curse Us” is. Even from the first notes of “Aurora Atra” (the album opener) you can sense that this is going to be one loud mother fucker. Unlike most bands that play […]

Black Shape of Nexus – Negative Black(2012)

June 15, 2012 by drdoomslair

Mannheim, Germany’s BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS, without doubt is one of the most underrated extreme bands out there. I didn’t know much about them before their monumental live show in Athens a few months ago. Among the 3 (great) bands that played that night, B-SON was by far the most devastating one. “Negative Black” marks a new musical direction for the band. Now before you start thinking that B-SON started to play soft, mellow tunes I will rush to make […]

Wedding in Hades – Misbehaviour(2012)

June 7, 2012 by drdoomslair

It’s been so long since I really enjoyed a Goth/Doom release. It’s easy to play fast if you wanna play Thrash and it’s easy to play brutal if wanna play Death. But make no mistake it’s impossible to play Doom/Death and be good at it if there is no true darkness in you soul. WEDDING IN HADES are doing a damn good job revving the lost feeling that made this genre so popular during the 90’s. “Misbehaviour” their second full-length […]

Candlemass – Psalms For the Dead(2012)

June 5, 2012 by drdoomslair

“Psalms For the Dead” is final album of the arguably most successful Doom band ever existed. Of course, with the marketing games the labels are playing these days, you can never be sure about the “last” part. This review is written in the shadow of the big announcement that Robert Lowe has left the band and his place now takes Mats Leven. The truth is that the position of the frontman has always been an issue for the band. While […]
