Ufomammut – Oro:Opus Primum(2012)

There are very few bands in Doom that have a direct spiritual connection with the audience. OM is one of the them UFOMAMMUT is another. After the great success of the band’s previous album “Eve” everyone was anticipating for UFOMAMMUT’s next move! “Oro” is an album comprised of two volumes with “Opus Primum” being the first part. This two-part-one-album move must have made a lot of people happy.

Like all UFOMAMMUT albums “Opus Primum” is not the easiest thing to follow especially if you are new to the Doom genre. “Opus Primum” opens in a way similar to “Eve” with a repeating, soul torturing synth effect torturing escalating! As a matter of fact “Oro” is very close to “Eve” in almost every way. I would say that “Eve” was the darkest anthem of the band and “Oro” is their most trippy work to date. This differentiation of course is minimal and for me it’s a bit surprising that a progressive band like UFOMAMMUT didn’t chose to experiment in a drastically new direction!

To me the infinite deep, black space is the album’s main theme. Distorted radio transmissions, UFO-like effects and minimalistic riffs is you get here. Did I neglect to mention loud bass, distorted super low frequency guitars and punishing drums? Well, they are all here.

In terms of real musical inspiration it is with no doubt that the “Opus Primum” material is inferior to both “Eve” and “Idolum”. But let me make myself clear by saying that fans of the band will, by no chance get disappointed. I find it pretty damn hard that the super heavyweight class of “Aureum” will leave many of you untouched.

I must admit that I wasn’t stunned by “Opus Primum” but the band proves once more that belongs to the elite of the genre.
