Stone Magnum – S/T(2012)

February 29, 2012 by drdoomslair

Here is another new band Doom fans should know. STONE MAGNUM from Indiana play classic Doom/Stoner in a perfect textbook way. While there is nothing new about their style, the quality of every composition in this album moves to high standards and I find it hard to believe that this album will leave the dedicated Doom fan untouched. Vocals at times remind of Ozzy (especially from his solo era) while other times they are more harsh. Think of Lemmy rather […]

Blood Red Water – Tales of Addiction and Despair(2012)

February 26, 2012 by drdoomslair

It seems that this four piece from Venice doesn’t care much about the romantic atmosphere of which their birthplace is famous for. Their Sludge sound is full of mud, dirt and filth and I would say that these three words sum it up for the entire EP. BLOOD RED WATER play a (not so original) mix of the slower kind of Sludge with some early Punk elements here and there to complete the recipe. Vocals often change between clear and […]

Pilgrim – Misery Wizard(2012)

February 23, 2012 by drdoomslair

It’s been a long time seen I discovered a Doom band that can play sloooow, heavy, dark Doom…the serious kind of Doom. If you take a look at Pilgrim’s “Misery Wizard” cover art you will probably see some similarities with some REVEREND BIZARRE’s covers. Now, if I remember correctly REVEREND BIZARRE is (was) the band that knows how to play like that. Let me tell you, the similarities don’t stop in the covers of course. PILGRIM is a new band […]

Paint it Black (Interview with Pale Divine)

February 22, 2012 by drdoomslair

If you are looking for a missing chapter in the genre called Doom Metal then PALE DIVINE is indeed one! Unfortunate enough to have been born in a transitional phase of Doom this band would have been huge if the timing was better. But PALE DIVINE never give up they just return with great albums one after another! “Painted Windows Black” is the title of their new offspring set to be released in a few weeks from now! We had […]

Pallbearer – Sorrow and Extinction(2012)

February 22, 2012 by drdoomslair

This was actually a very hard album to review. On one hand, there are so many things to say for an album of the magnitude of “Sorrow and Extinction” that it’s virtually impossible not to be unfair to it. On the other hand, what “Sorrow and Extinction” means to me might be a totally different thing to you. Without doubt we are dealing with a great piece of art here. I would say, on a very solid base of melancholy […]

SpellJammer – Vol II(2012)

February 19, 2012 by drdoomslair

SPELLJAMMER is a new band from Sweden and with their second EP entitled, “Vol II”, the 4-piece proves that it can move higher than the already high standards of their homeland. Indeed, SPELLJAMMER is not another one of those great Swedish bands. Their music aims right for the top! “Inches from the Sun” the band’s first EP sounded like ACID KING covering KYUSS in weird way. The band’s flavor of Stoner/Desert Rock was unique and their style sounded at least […]

Burning Saviours – The Offering(2012)

February 16, 2012 by drdoomslair

BURNING SAVIOURS is a Swedish doom band so this automatically means that you should pay some attention! Statistically, Sweden plus Doom equals great things and I would say that BURNING SAVIOURS is no exception to this equation! If you have followed the band you will probably know BURNING SAVIOURS’ love for classic Rock and proto-Metal. Their back catalog is comprised of three demos, an EP and three full lengths including “Nymphs and Weavers” which I consider a pretty descent Rock […]

King Giant – Dismal Hallow(2012)

February 15, 2012 by drdoomslair

It’s time to dive into the deep south once again! “Dismal Hallow” is the title of the second album of one of my favorite new bands on the scene. Although KING GIANT have lost the advantage of surprise, after listening to “Dismal Hallow” you won’t have much room but to agree that this one sounds even better than their monster debut. KING GIANT play a flavor of Stoner executed in a slower than the usual way and with the addition […]

Wino & Conny Ochs – Heavy Kingdom(2012)

February 14, 2012 by drdoomslair

The omnipotent, the everlasting, the eternal Wino returns. No, it’s not the new Saint Vitus album, neither an album with his new band Premonition 13, nor something from a side-project. “Heavy Kingdom” is a collaboration with the talented musician CONNY OCHS, and for those of you who follow WINO faithfully all these years, you already know that this is the first record of many more to come this year with his name mentioned on the credits. Like I mentioned earlier […]
