Arenna – Beats of Olarizu

This Spanish band was totally new to me and this record was lying around neglected until I noticed the super cool artwork! For what is worth, I apologize for postponing the review ofsuch a giga-ton bomb for so long. Indeed, it seems that “Beats of Olarizu” has hit the spot and here we are dealing with one the best stoner releases of this year!

Classic stoner riffs, classic stoner album! This is what “Beats of Olarizu” is all about. Nothing really new but everything is played with extra love and respect to the genre and the result is actually way beyond any kind of expectations. Their heavy side resembles that of Kyuss while the more psychedelic side of the band reminds Colour Haze. Actually, fans of the latter will find great comfort in the frequent a-la Hendrix jam passages like the ones contained in the 30 minutes bomb “Metamorphosis in IC [0,9168 g/cm3]“. “Eclipse” is also one of the best stoner song I heard in 2011. It starts out with some acoustic guitar, carries on slow but somewhere in the middle sets off with a monster riff! Totally loved this one!

The bands greatest skill is that they can basically produce songs that are both works of art and songs with the traditional meaning of the term. Even though some of them are quite lengthy, they totally make sense! Vocals are another asset of this band! Hoarse, but constantly in high scales I would say that their singer has one of the most interesting tones on the genre today.

Certainly one of the top 2 pure stoner albums I heard so far this year. (The other would be “Wight Weedy Wight” in case you wonder). A must-have for stoner fans, and it comes on a sweet digipack format and orange LP for the lucky ones. Cannot recommend this one more…
