The Atomic Bitchwax Live @ Athens An Club 29.04.2011

April 30, 2011 by drdoomslair

Madleaf: I got in the club 9:30 sharp! Right on time, (for a change) only to see a totally empty club! After about 1 hour of delay (and with many doubts about the course of this show from my side) the band decided to finally boot the gig! Something like <100 people on the club but with a good percentage of women! First time I watched this band and boy they took me by surprise! Their album "Sinners" was a […]

Red Fang – Murder the Mountains(2011)

April 28, 2011 by drdoomslair

So after a really promising EP and a video clip that became an instant classic the boys from Portland return and this time they bring a full length with them. First note: the band has signed with Relapse and still they didn’t get a descent album cover. Rats!! Second note: Murder the Mountains?!?! Is that an anti-Green revolution campaign??? Hope we’ll soon find out! To be honest when I finished listening to the album I was in a bit of […]

Wooden Stake – Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenade(2011)

April 27, 2011 by drdoomslair

After the surprisingly great EP “Vampire Plague Exorcism” Wooden Stake never stopped feeding us with great releases one after another. So what is cited by critics and fans alike as one of the most promising acts of contemporary doom finally released their first full length. “Dungeon Prayers & Tombyard Serenade” after long anticipation in my hands. First impressions? What a sweet artwork! It convinced me to buy their t-shirt and it’s a killer one! Since this is already a late […]

Wight Weedy Wight CD

Wight – Wight Weedy Wight(2011)

April 25, 2011 by drdoomslair

Perhaps I should have written this review much earlier as the album was released sometime in January or February. It is with great surprise though that I see still no one is talking about the band. “Wight Weedy Wight” is the debut album for the German trio, and if you have been searching for something that combines doom, stoner and psychedelic you‘ve just hit the spot. The band obviously has a master’s degree on the 70’s vibe. Unlike most bands […]

The Gates of Slumber – The Wretch(2011)

April 24, 2011 by drdoomslair

The bad boys from Indianapolis return with their 5th full length. The band needs no special introduction as it seems to be quite a hot topic lately. Maybe their shift to a major label helped them in this department. On the other hand I think “The Wretch” is just one step away from becoming overhyped. I was one of those who totally loved “Conqueror” but felt “Hymns of Blood and Thunder” came a bit short! (Later on I started to […]

Pentagram – Live @Athens, An club 04.18.2011

April 19, 2011 by drdoomslair

Lucky Funeral: I’ve seen these guys live 4 times. This was the best of the 4 no doubt. Better setlist. A tighter band overall. Much better sound especially in comparison with their last live. The Hawaiian flowers around the singers neck really made the difference. Infidel: Really, loved “I, the Oathbreaker”. Traditional doom, to the bone. Lyrics that remind Messiah. Heavy sound. Epic feeling. I loved everything about it. The band on this live played exclusively songs from their upcoming […]

Pentagram – Last Rites(2011)

April 16, 2011 by drdoomslair

If you are not reading this post by accident then I take it you already know who Pentagram are and what they have done to the style that is called Doom. Before I start with the review of the “Last Rites” I have to say that considering the difficulties, the constant change in lineup, Bobby’s drug issues etc. the fact that this band still exists and makes new records is amazing by itself. So, Pentagram in its current version features […]

Chatting with the Mighty Ones (Interview with Subrosa)

April 13, 2011 by drdoomslair

It is strange to find a violin on a doom band, not to mention two violins! The mighty 5-piece from Salt Lake City that used to be an all-female band shifted to a…mostly-female band, but judging from the heavy sound of their new record, I would swear its an all-bodybuilders band. Beauty and power…Rebecca and Sarah tell us how they combine both in “No Help for the Mighty Ones”. Dr.Doom: Hi Rebecca! Congrats for the great job on “No Help […]

Acid King Live @Rodeo Club 04.10.2011

April 12, 2011 by drdoomslair

The legendary Kings (and Queen) of stoner scene arrived late Sunday night all the way from San Francisco for one exclusive show for us. Only few people on this one, the chosen few! To tell you the truth I never believed I would ever see this band live! My kudos to the promoter of the event (I don’t know the guy) for bringing the band! I arrived so late at the club that I wasn’t able to see the two […]
