Lord Vicar/Griftegard – Split(2011)

February 25, 2011 by drdoomslair

Lord Vicar and Griftegard, two of the biggest names of the contemporary doom scene face off in this split effort. Lord Vicar contributes a cover of “Do you Believe?” by The Cardigans. I remember the Deftones cover, for the specific song and I was impressed with how heavy that riff sounded when it was played on guitar. Same here. Many times slower of course and well…more doom. Unlike Deftones who took a pessimistic approach on the vocals, in Lord Vicar’s […]

Breakfast with the Snake (Interview with The Red Coil)

February 22, 2011 by drdoomslair

5th and final part of our tribute to the new wave of southern rock finds us back in Europe, in Italy to be more specific. It’s not an easy thing to make a fuss with just one EP but The Red Coil did that. “Slough off” presents an interesting approach mixing heavy metal and southern rock to create a very special sound. Balancing somewhere between commercial and underground it’s interesting to see the next move from these guys. We had a little […]

Doomsword – The Eternal Battle(2011)

February 20, 2011 by drdoomslair

Another long awaited release comes to be in early 2011. The Italian gods of epic metal (or epic doom for the more romantic) come back with their new offspring entitled as “The Eternal Battle”. The expectations are quite high since the worst album of Doomsword is simply a damn good album! To be honest after listening the “The Eternal Battle” for the first time I was a bit shocked! One more time Doomsword have experimented with their style. Here, they […]

Orchid – Capricorn(2011)

February 19, 2011 by drdoomslair

Why hiding? “Capricorn” is the best album I heard in 2011 (so far). That simple. And since 2011 has just started this statement may take away some its glory. So, let me rephrase: This is one of the most interesting albums I’ve heard in several years. I think one of the saddest things that can happen to this album is to be reviewed by people that are not really fans of Black Sabbath. Then the label “rip-offs” will surely start […]

Stayed in Mississippi a day too long (Interview with Mississippi Bones)

February 18, 2011 by drdoomslair

4th part of our tribute to the new wave of southern rock! This duo from Ohio  took swampy blues and transformed them into metal riffs, added some Clutch groove and boom! You got yourselves a killer debut! It seems the Big River has inspired some the muddiest souther rock artists but this might not be the case with Mississippi Bones as Dusty (guitar/bass/drums programming) explains… Dr.D.: Congratulations for the album. All reviews I‘ve read are really positive! Did you expect […]

Crowbar – Sever the Wicked Hand(2011)

February 16, 2011 by drdoomslair

After pretty much giving shape to what is called Sludge nowadays, these guys never stopped producing one solid album one after another. To tell you the truth it was the first time I was afraid that a Crowbar release would suck… The years have passed, there is Down in the middle to keep Kirk busy and most of all it was the only album that Kirk wrote completely sober. My experience tells me it’s a bad sign. Fortunately this is […]

Wo Fat – Noche del Chupacabra(2011)

February 15, 2011 by drdoomslair

Wo Fat’s “Noche del chupacabra” is probably the first major release on the stoner scene for this year. In this case the major is in terms of value and not publicity. Still I can’t believe how bands that have produced albums like “Psychedelonaut” don’t enjoy wider public acceptance. What the Texans do here is more or less repeat the successful recipe of their predecessor. You won’t find any surprises here and their style (especially on vocals and guitar) is becoming […]

V.A. – Miss Fortune was a Henhouse Manager(2011)

February 13, 2011 by drdoomslair

Spinaloga records comes with an all Greek bands compilation that carries the strange name “Miss Fortune was a Henhouse Manager”. This compilation sums up pretty much what is going on lately in the underground doom Greek scene. Spinaloga is a small Greek island where lepers were forced to go, so I guess they did a nice job gathering all the “outcast” extreme sound of the music industry! The 16 bands contained in this double CD compilation, cover a wide variety […]

South of Darkness (Interview with King Giant)

February 11, 2011 by drdoomslair

Just when you thought that southern rock is full of uplifting, fun-tunes then came King Giant. This 5 piece from Virginia printed their souls on CD and I have to tell you it sounds dark! So dark that the “Southern Darkness” is 100% accurate! Did I mention people say they sound as cool as Johnny Cash risen from the grave? David Kowalski (rhythm guitars) humbly doesn’t accept this, but is kind enough to answer to our questions. Dr.D:  Thanks for this interview. […]
